CHAPTER 12

“Are you sure it’s wise to go out when so much is on the line?” I smoothed my wool pants repeatedly as Aidoneus drove us across town to my favorite seafood restaurant.

Aidoneus’s hand landed on mine. “There’s no better time. Todd is at the station getting as much information as he can. Stella and her kids are at the house with Nina, Nana, and your mom. You didn’t want them scrying for the pixie dust thief without you and you are in no shape to do something that magically taxing until we know, with certainty the ashes are no longer affecting you. You deserve a night out.”

It was difficult for me to set aside the guilt and the need to go and help Todd or scry regardless of the ashes in my system. I was letting people down. Mundie police officers had been injured because of me. That didn’t sit well in the least. On top of all of this, there was Mave’s remains to recover.

“How can you forget about the chaos these Tainted bitches are causing? They’ve killed countless mundies, stolen weapons, and created a device to steal memories. This city could be facing an extreme crisis if more than half of our police force is affected. We need to find them and their spray paint cans of doom.”

Aidoneus’s eyes shifted my way before going back to the road ahead. “None of that is far from my mind. We both need a break. You’ve been going non-stop for months. Or do you not trust Xinar, Tseki, and Murdoch to patrol the city?”

I rubbed the ache forming behind my eyeballs. “I forgot they offered to look for the witches. Alright, I’ll let this go. I didn’t mean to put a damper on the night.”

Aidon squeezed my hand. “You did no such thing. I know how you are, Queenie. The way you fight for those who can’t do it for themselves is only one thing that made me fall in love with you. In my long life I've never met anyone more dedicated to strangers. You embody selflessness and I find that sexy as hell.”

His words felt like a whole body embrace that spread warmth throughout me. “I love you, too. Thank you for looking out for me. And for teaching me what it means to have a true partner. So, have you ever been to The Waterfront before?” My mouth watered as I shifted focus to their delicious dishes. I was craving some lobster stew which was crazy. My favorite was their clam chowder.

“I can’t say I’ve had the pleasure. But I’ve heard you talk about their chowder and lobster rolls enough that I feel like I’ve been there.” Aidon turned into the parking lot and found a spot.

The restaurant was right on the water and a chilly wind pierced me the second I got out of the warm vehicle. I tugged my jacket closed. “Mom and Mythia are better cooks. Don’t get me wrong, though. The food here is fresh and delicious.
